Brooklyn Cemetery Clean-Up Weekend

We had another great clean-up weekend with
Monroe Center Boy Scout Troop 50!

This weekend we had about 25 volunteers and we finished clearing the
locust trees and lilac bushes in the front of the cemetery.

This is the last patch of locust trees and lilac bushes in the main part of the cemetery. They were all cleared and piled in the back or cut into firewood for the volunteers.

The markers photograph much better with the afternoon sunlight hitting them. We also have new growth starting. It will be exciting to see which plants come up now that the ground is exposed to sun. We are working with the Byron Forest Preserve to determine which plants are native. That way we can keep the most beneficial, least invasive.

Brooklyn Cemetery Clean-Up Weekends

Our clean-up weekend turned out even better than we could have hoped!
We had more than 30 volunteers on Friday and about 20 on Saturday
so we were able to make great progress.

A Huge Thank You Goes Out To The Following People/Organizations.
We Couldn't Have Done It Without You!

Russell, Austin, and Donald from the Byron Forest Preserve.
Without their manpower and wood chipper,
we wouldn't have made a dent, yet!
They hauled out 16 dump truck loads of chips!

Scout Troops from Monroe Center, Oregon, and Stillman Valley
did an awesome job clearing their designated areas. Not only did they cut
down trees and thickets, they also made hundreds of trips to the chipper
with the brush they cleared.

Steve Blackmoor from the Prairie Preserve of Ogle County for
his sage advice and hard work making sure the guys operating
the chipper didn't get bored!

Chuck Vant for allowing us to use his lane to move brush, giving us
a much shorter path to the chipper!

Phil Young for allowing us to traipse through his yard for two days
to get into the cemetery!

Big John for giving us a great deal on the all-important Port-A-Potty!

(This photo may be c1910. The teacher in this photo appears to be Miss Katherine Grover.
She taught at the Brooklyn School around that time.)

The huge cedar tree in the cemetery on the right was down when we started clearing.
Just cutting that up was a big job. The trunk had to be hauled away in pieces
because it was too large for the chipper.

Volunteers lined River Road!

The Oregon Scout Troop tackled the overgrown lilac bushes in the front of the cemetery. Amazing, considering there was a lilac bush over every inch of their project area!

Note the 15' monument on the right-hand side in the picture below. I didn't even know it was there until they finished!

These stones probably haven't seen sunshine in 20 years!

The path to the chipper!
In the last 2 pictures, they coudn't keep up with us! That didn't last long...

October 11, 2008
One week ago you couldn't even get to these markers. They had a tree on top of them as well as vines growing over, under and through their area. The Stillman Valley Scouts did a great job clearing this tough area.

The lillies have done very well here. This area had its own fence with a gate, which are not salvageable. Would their descendents like to replace it with a new one?

Filled another dump truck.

We only had the Cemetery Board available today, but we still managed to fill the dump truck 4 times! Big Thanks to Russell for taking time out of his Saturday to run the chipper for us.

We still have a lot of work to do next year. Once we get all the brush and trees cleared, we will need to concentrate on repairing damaged markers.
